Airline overbooking in the multi-class case

چکیده

This paper presents an airline overbooking model at a class level for one service compartment±cabin. Class level demand data is used to determine the number of bookings that can be taken for each class. The model is optimised through the use of multi-dimensional search routines. The control level model developed is tested with data supplied by Ireland's national airline, Aer Lingus. The model shows a signi®cant improvement over previous methods employed by Aer Lingus and was subsequently adopted by the airline.

AIRLINE STOCHASTIC CAPACITY ALLOCATION BY APPLYING REVENUE MANAGEMENT

To formulate a single-leg seat inventory control problem in an airline ticket sales system, the concept and techniques of revenue management are applied in this research. In this model, it is assumed the cabin capacity is stochastic and hence its exact size cannot be forecasted in advance, at the time of planning. There are two groups of early-reserving and late-purchasing customers demanding t...

Single-Leg Airline Revenue Management with Overbooking

Airline revenue management is about identifying the maximum revenue seat allocation policies. Since a major loss in revenue results from cancellations and no-show passengers, over the years overbooking has received a significant attention in the literature. In this study, we propose new models for static and dynamic single-leg overbooking problems. In the static case, we introduce computational...

A Dynamic Programming Decomposition Method for Making Overbooking Decisions Over an Airline Network

In this paper, we develop a revenue management model to jointly make the capacity allocation and overbooking decisions over an airline network. Our approach begins with the dynamic programming formulation of the capacity allocation and overbooking problem and uses an approximation strategy to decompose the dynamic programming formulation by the flight legs. This decomposition idea opens up the ...

Optimizing Airline Overbooking Using a Hybrid Gradient Approach and Statistical Modeling

We develop an overbooking approach for airline revenue management. We estimate a revenue function by employing a statistical modeling approach, specifically a multivariate adaptive regression splines approximation of a stochastic network model. We develop an overbooking cost function using a binomial distribution to model the number of customers that show up for the flight. We implement a hybri...

Overbooking with Substitutable Inventory Classes

This paper considers an overbooking problem with multiple reservation and inventory classes, in which the multiple inventory classes may be used as substitutes to satisfy the demand of a given reservation class (perhaps at a cost). The problem is to jointly determine overbooking levels for the reservation classes, taking into account the substitution options. Such problems arise in a variety of...
